Friheden, a hidden gem?

Tivoli Friheden is an amusement park located in the city of Aarhus in Denmark. It is home to three coasters and other unique attractions. Originally, this park wasn’t a part of our Scandinavia trip but when we found out the park was close to our hotel we couldn’t resist a visit. And it didn’t disappoint! We fell in love with the park, the attractions weren’t outstanding but the vibe there was truly amazing. It is really a must visit when you are in the area.

Getting to the park

The park is located near the center of Aarhus, one of the largest cities in Denmark. This makes the park easily reachable with the means of public transport. We took a direct bus from our hotel which was located next to the station. This was very easy to use and very convenient.

The entrance of the park is located next to a sidewalk and the park itself is located in a park area. You can also easily reach the park on foot from the city center if you don’t want to take a bus.

The entrance itself is really pretty and stylish. You can easily buy your tickets at the counter and the personnel are really friendly. Your entrance ticket consists of a ticket to enter the park and a bracelet that allows you to ride all the rides. This bracelet is called a turbånd. You just show it at every ride entrance and then you can ride the rides.

The park

When you visit Tivoli Friheden, you shouldn’t expect these mega attractions and you should definitely not go there for the coasters. All of the park's best rides are flat rides, but they have some good and unique ones.

Their crown jewel is their 30m high Sky Tower. This is not your typical free fall. Your experience starts with paying an extra fee in the candy shop next door. Once you have bought your special ticket to heaven (or hell if you are afraid of heights), you board an elevator that gets you all the way up to the platform where you then will be attached to a rope and will be dropped 30m to the ground.

All the other attractions are included in the price for your ride wristband. These include three coasters consisting of a very slow wild mouse, a wacky worm and a SBF spinning coaster. Their flat rides are great though. They have the tallest drop tower in Denmark, with a height of 65m and it offers some great views over the surroundings.

They also have a fun Gerstlaurer Sky racer called Sommerfuglen. This can be compared to a Sky Fly but low to the ground and more difficult to control. I rode it multiple times and I only managed to be upside down for about a second. I enjoyed this ride a lot because it was a real challenge to get upside down. This is a ride type that more parks should get as it is fun, interactive and it doesn't take up a lot of space.

Their last big flat ride is a Pendulum-style of ride that inverts called Himmelrum (a name that I think is really beautiful). Unlike on the funfairs the individual seats don’t rotate, which I think makes the ride more enjoyable. The ride itself is thrilling but not something out of the ordinary.

There are also some other more family-friendly orientated rides. These are maybe a bit tamer but still very enjoyable and a must do when you are in the park. One of the most unique attractions here are these little boats that you can navigate yourself.

The best part about the park is the atmosphere. The park itself is really pretty and offers some great garden areas. If you just want to relax and take up all the surroundings there is plenty to see here. You can find some great photo spots with the greenery all around the park if you are into that alswell.

We really enjoyed it here and we also took the time to sit down and take in our surroundings, which is a thing we don’t do often.

The food

We didn’t eat much there. I only ate a hot dog, which was very good and my girlfriend ate an ice cream with three big scoops. Although we didn’t eat much there we saw some of the food outlets and it looked delicious. Definitely better than your average theme park food.

Overshadowed - conclusion

The park itself is overshadowed by its darker history. Before we went there, we had only heard about it because of its deadly accident with Cobra. We had not heard anything positive about the park, which I think is a real shame because the park itself is amazing and we had such a great time here.

We only went here because it was a 10 minute bus ride from our hotel but that spontaneous visit resulted in one of the most fun theme park visits of the trip. We also look forward to going there again one day and trying out the new Eurofighter that they will be adding to their line-up.

So all by all this park was truly an amazing find and I couldn’t recommend a visit to this park enough.
